Released by Epic Games in 2017, Fortnite quickly became a global phenomenon, capturing the attention of millions of players. However, as new games emerged, its dominance in the battle royale genre gradually declined. Recently, Epic Games reignited interest in the game by introducing "Fortnite OG," a special mode that brings back the original map and mechanics, sparking a wave of nostalgia among longtime fans.
Fortnite is a battle royale game where 100 players are dropped onto an island, scavenging for weapons and resources while trying to outlast their opponents. A shrinking storm forces players into closer quarters, ensuring action-packed encounters until only one player or team remains to claim the coveted "Victory Royale."
One of Fortnite’s defining features is its seasonal structure, which functions similarly to a TV series. Each season, lasting around 90 days, introduces new content, mechanics, and storyline developments to keep the gameplay fresh. This strategy helps Fortnite stand out from competitors like Apex Legends and Call of Duty. Players can also purchase the Battle Pass, which offers exclusive skins, emotes, and other rewards that change with each season.
Fortnite's frequent collaborations with major franchises have been instrumental in maintaining its popularity. Epic Games has partnered with brands such as Star Wars, Marvel, and DC, as well as celebrities like Ariana Grande and Juice WRLD. Additionally, the introduction of dance emotes inspired by viral trends further engages the player base, making customization a key appeal of the game.
Riley McKee, a junior majoring in communication studies, recently became a Fortnite fan after being introduced to the game last year.
“I think having new skins is a big reason people keep coming back,” McKee said. “I know I mainly spend money on skins and dances because they’re just fun. That’s what keeps a lot of players engaged.”
Despite the excitement around new collaborations and evolving gameplay, many longtime players reminisce about the simplicity of Fortnite’s earlier seasons. Recognizing this nostalgia, Epic Games launched "Fortnite OG" on December 6, 2024, reviving the original Chapter 1, Season 1 map with iconic locations like Dusty Depot, Greasy Grove, and Pleasant Park.
Ryan Hoffman, a sophomore studying sports management and a Fortnite veteran, shared his thoughts on the differences between the standard game and OG mode.
“It’s more laid back,” Hoffman said. “The current game feels more modern, while OG brings back the original experience.”
Even newer players, like McKee, understand the appeal of the OG version.
“I think the nostalgia of playing on the old maps is what draws people in,” McKee said. “But I also think new maps with mythical weapons can be more fun than just the standard guns in OG mode.”
For many college students, Fortnite serves as a way to relax after a long day. While it remains a competitive game, players often use it as a social activity to connect with friends and unwind.
Arianna Schaus, a junior studying integrated health care studies, first got into Fortnite during the COVID-19 lockdown as a way to pass the time. She recently returned to the game for similar reasons.
“I don’t really care about winning,” Schaus said. “For me, it’s more about having fun and taking a break from school and work.”
Fortnite's multiplayer options, which allow players to team up in duos, trios, or squads, make it easy to stay connected with friends and family.
“I got a headset so I could play with my sister and nephew,” Schaus said. “That’s really the main reason I play—it’s something we can do together even when we’re apart.”
For students like Schaus, Fortnite remains more than just a game—it’s a way to stay in touch with loved ones and de-stress. Whether it’s the nostalgia of Fortnite OG or the thrill of new skins and collaborations, Epic Games continues to provide an engaging experience that keeps players coming back.
