The dream of Xbox Game Pass on the Nintendo Switch 2 is something that excites me, but it also brings with it a bittersweet realization. As I get older and responsibilities pile up, I’ve had to accept that my gaming backlog may never be fully cleared. The Nintendo Switch, however, allowed me to at least make a dent in it. It was the first portable console that enabled me to play home console-quality games on the go, or more often, when the TV was already occupied.
While the Switch isn’t as powerful as the PS4, Xbox One, or later the PS5 and Series X|S, I never needed it to be. Although I have a deep love for first-party Nintendo titles and new releases, I’m particularly fond of remasters of older games that have been sitting in my backlog for years.
A Portable Remaster Machine
Despite the criticism the Switch often receives as a "portable remaster machine," it’s exactly this feature that I love the most. It has helped me work through my backlog, and I hope the Switch 2 continues this trend. Of course, new intellectual properties are exciting, but a more powerful Switch could also mean even better remasters.
The idea of Microsoft bringing its first-party franchises like Halo to the console is an exciting possibility. It's reminiscent of the days when Sonic the Hedgehog games made their way to Nintendo consoles during the GameCube era.
Then I imagine a future where Xbox Game Pass comes to the Switch 2, and it just keeps getting better. While no such announcement has been made yet, in a world where Halo is already on Nintendo platforms, is the idea of Game Pass on the Switch 2 really that far-fetched? From my perspective, it’s just the next logical step in the growing partnership between Microsoft and Nintendo. With my gaming backlog steadily growing, having access to Xbox games on a portable console would be my salvation.
I see friends enjoying this experience already on devices like the ASUS ROG Ally, and I've been tempted to pull the trigger on one myself. But something has held me back: the hope that the Switch 2 will offer the same experience.
An Xbox-Nintendo Partnership
An alliance between Xbox and Nintendo would be a game-changer for the entire industry. The Switch 2 will likely be much more widely adopted than niche devices like the ROG Ally, and a portable Game Pass device in the hands of so many gamers could be a huge win for both companies – and something Sony would struggle to respond to.
Remote play options, such as the Backbone and PlayStation Portal, exist, but let’s face it: streaming isn’t on the same level as native play. Maybe one day it will be, but for now, I still find it awkward and laggy.
While Game Pass on the Switch 2 seems like an ideal match, it also raises questions about the future of Xbox. As the brand transitions more toward a service-oriented model rather than focusing on traditional consoles, does it even need the “box” anymore?
The Future of Xbox
The Xbox brand is about much more than just Game Pass. It includes Microsoft’s first-party titles, now expanded with Activision Blizzard and many other former third-party developers. Even if Xbox were to move away from the console race, it would still be a major force in the gaming industry, and any platform with access to its library would benefit greatly. This would be especially true if there were exclusive content.
However, the Switch 2 is unlikely to match PlayStation’s power or visual fidelity, so perhaps this idea is a bit far-reaching. The Switch 2, along with PC, may not be enough to sustain Xbox’s current position.
But it’s an idea worth considering—and perhaps one day, it could become a reality. The thought of Xbox leaving the console race and evolving into something more significant is a somewhat sad prospect. Just like Nintendo and PlayStation, Xbox consoles bring a unique flavor to the market, and I would hate to see a world without them. My sleek Series S sits alongside my PS5, and I’ll admit, my relationship with Xbox has evolved over time.
I value Xbox’s exclusive titles and the Game Pass service above all else, and if they extended their offerings to third-party devices like the Switch 2, I’d definitely follow. Even though such a shift would be bittersweet, the growing alignment between Xbox and Nintendo could be a positive development, especially for helping me tackle my ever-expanding gaming backlog.
